County of endless Gravel

Discover gravel cycling in north-eastern Småland, where Swedish nature and Astrid Lindgren's world of stories come together. Småland, with its forests, lakes and red cottages, is a vibrant part of Sweden and an enchanting cycling destination.

Here you can tramp over picturesque dirt roads and pass iconic places such as Mariannelund, Lönneberga and Bullerbyn. But the experience doesn't stop at grazing kilometer after kilometer of fantastic dirt road, however beautiful the surroundings may be. It is the whole that makes cycling around Vimmerby, Eksjö and Hultsfred to something special.

Småland feels like a real little gravel mecca with picturesque and dreamy roads that take you back to the fairytale world and the characters in Astrid Lindgren's books. The roads are in fantastic condition and Småland is also quite hilly.

Third best area for gravel cycling

Småland Gravel (northeast Småland) has been voted by Happyride.se and their readers as one of the country's three best areas for gravel cycling! We think it's a lot of fun and hope that even more people want to discover all our awesome dirt roads and challenging heights.

Cycle tours

Starting at Vimmerby Torg, you make your way along paved roads along the beautiful lake Krön, past Musteriet's restaurant and apple must factory, historic Djursdala and back to Vimmerby via Snokebo.

This tour takes you on a journey from Vimmerby Torg and the Astrid Lindgren statue to Gibberyd and all our Emil in Lönnebergas Katthult and then back to Vimmerby via Rumskulla. The roads are surrounded by the nature of Småland and the surface alternates between asphalt and gravel.

Get out into the Småland landscape and experience the area's roads and paths that take you from Fredensborgs Herrgård to Pelarne and the filming location for Astrid Lindgren's The Children of Noisy Village in Sevedstorp. The route then takes you back to Fredensborg in a southern direction via Faggemåla.

Lönneberga Gravel is a gravel adventure that we're sure Emil would have liked. There are a total of four different routes to choose from – 75, 100, 165, 205. The routes go through Vimmerby, Eksjö and Hultsfred municipality and take you through vast forests, past lots of red cottages and beautiful lakes. It is not difficult to imagine how this area inspired the setting in many of Astrid Lindgren's works. Whether you are an experienced gravel cyclist or a beginner, you can find suitable routes and challenges in Lönneberga Gravel.

A very varied round that goes south on beautiful roads with many lakes. Don't miss the Björnnäset nature reserve, which is right next to Stora Hammarsjön's wilderness camping - a popular area all year round. Here there are plenty of hiking trails, lakes to take a dip in and nice places for a break and coffee. The tour goes around the beautiful lake Hulingen, which takes you all the way to the location of Sweden's most legendary music festival - the Hultsfredsfestivalen. The site is next door to Hultsfred Strandcamping & Waffel café. The tour continues on a challenging climb after Norrhult before it is rounded off with a visit to the genuine working community of Storebro and ends at Fredensborgs Herrgård.

Hulingen Gravel is a round that stretches around the lake Hulingen in Hultsfred. It runs on fantastically fine dirt roads through several beautiful nature reserves and along sparkling lakes. Of course, you pass the site of Sweden's most legendary music festival - Hultsfredfestivalen.

Skärvetenturen Gravel tour takes you through the heyday of the furniture industry and the beautiful landscape in and around Virserum. Here you cross several watercourses in Emån's catchment area, which were of great importance for the rise of industries.

The tour takes you through the deepest Småland forests. It is varied ground but technically easy. You cycle past the red cottages with white knots, farmland and winding roads that contain a few climbs. In the village of Vrånganäs, there is Café Tre Systrar with a focus on home-baked, locally produced and organic food. Note! The cafe has limited opening hours, keep an eye on their Facebook page to see when they are open. The tour continues towards Skärslida and Kråketorp, takes you along Skärveteån to take you through Virserum and up towards Dackestupet.

Discover the beauty of Småland's nature on our bike tour from picturesque Eksjö town via Skuru Gata back to Eksjö. Skurugata is an approximately 800 meter long "scura" or fault crack that is often described as southern Sweden's most peculiar natural phenomenon. With its winding roads, the tour takes you through forested heights past lakes and beautiful valleys, where every crest reveals a new vista to be enchanted by. The region is a real gem for cycling, the landscape offers genuine Småland character along the roads of the region. The amount of dirt roads feels endless in parts and the roads are almost car-free, which I really like. The variety is great and there are both hilly areas in the Småland highlands and more flat parts to suit a variety of different types of cycling.

4 tips for your Gravel adventure

Gravel cycling is so much more than just the cycling itself, it's important to stop and enjoy life along the way as well. The experience becomes so much greater, especially when you are on such historic ground as in northern Småland. These are simply 4 tips you can't miss!
